ALVIS, James Robert Jr., 76, of Roanoke, died Thursday afternoon, July 28, 1994 at his home. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Winston Alvis; a son, James Robert Alvis III and his wife, Cinda, Portland, Ore.; a daughter, Marguerite McNeil and her husband, Alex, Augusta, Ga.; a grandson, Blair McNeil, Blacksburg; and a granddaughter, Ferrell McNeil; and stepmother, Janie A. Secrest, Roanoke. He was a member of Virginia Heights Baptist Church for 51 years, taught a class of senior high boys. He was a charter member of Hidden Valley Country Club, Past President of the Raleigh Court Lions Club and a member of the Roanoke Elks Lodge. He was a member of Lakeland Masonic Lodge; Scottish Rite Bodies, Kazim Shrine Temple where he served in the Provost Guard Unit and in later years Personal Aide and Aide to many Potentates, member of the Roanoke Valley Shrine Club, Past Director of the Royal Order of Jesters and a member of the Kazim Golf Club. He operated his own wine business for many years, later retiring from Taylor Wine Company. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday morning 11 a.m. at the Virginia Heights Baptist Church with Dr. Daniel E. Scott officiating. In lieu of flowers it is requested memorial gifts be sent to the Virginia Heights Baptist Church Special Needs Fund, 2014 Memorial Ave. S.W., Roanoke, Va. 24015 or to the Good Samaritan Hospice, 3825 Electric Road, S.W., Roanoke, Va. 24018. BRIZENDINE, Ralph E., 89, of Catawba, passed away Thursday, July 28, 1994. Survived by sons, Richard Alvin Brizendine, Lewis Edward Brizendine, William Carlyle Brizendine and Robert Stuart Brizendine; daughters, Frances Ruth Looney, Joyce Estelle Headford, Elizabeth Marie Atkins; sister, Helen Carper; also surviving are 17 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, August 1, 1994 at Lotz Salem Chapel with the Rev. Ira Tolliver officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Lawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Catawba/Masons Cove Rescue Squad. CHAFIN, Hazel Walker, 87, of Riner, died Friday, July 29, 1994 in a Radford hospital. She was the widow of Alva M. Chafin and is survived by one daughter and son\ in-law, Sarah and Harley Collins, Riner; two sisters, Garnet Dickerson, Salem, Mildred May, Roanoke; a grandson, Roger Collins, Riner. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Sunday at the Pilot United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Walt Simmerman, with burial in Sunset Cemetery. Friends may call after noon Saturday, at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home. The family will receive friends there from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday evening. DICKERSON, Lilly Pearl Reed, 97, of Blacksburg, died Friday, July 29, 1994 at Heritage Hall Health Care Center. Mrs. Dickerson was born in Floyd County, Va., on June 2, 1897, a daughter of the late Henry Chephas Reed and Minnie L. Roberts Reed. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Mullins Dickerson and a daughter, Josephine Weddle. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Blanche Dickerson, Christiansburg; five daughters, three sons-in-law, Beulah and Hubert Grisson, Christiansburg, Virginia Jordan, Cincinnati, Ohio, Betty D. Crouch, R andleman, N. C., Barbara and Richard Hoge, Pembroke, Jane and Bill Lane, Blacksburg; one son-in-law, Paul Weddle, Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Gladys Webster, Christiansburg, Winnie Kinney, Palo Alto, Calif.; three brothers, Fred Reed, Christiansburg, Harry Reed, Front Royal, Joe Reed, Orlando, Fla.; 22 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 1994 at St. Michael Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Jacob Mayer officiating. Interment will follow in North Fork Baptist Church Cemetery, Ellett. DUNCAN, Burks M., (``Mack""), 76, of Roanoke, died Thursday, July 28, 1994. Mr. Duncan served in the U. S. Army as a Master Sergeant during WWII and the Korean Conflict, with the #246 Coast Artillery Battery I. He was a member of the DAV, the VFW Post #1264, and past Commander of the American Legion Post #3. He belonged to Melrose #139 A.F. & A.M., and the Kazim Shrine Temple. Mr. Duncan was an Animal Control Officer for the City of Roanoke, retiring with 11 years service, a member of the Roanoke City Auxiliary Police Force and a member of Melrose Baptist Church. Mr. Duncan was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur G. and Agnes F. Duncan, brothers, Arthur J. Duncan and Billy F. Duncan. He is survived by his wife, Inez G. Duncan; daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Ray Owens Jr.; grandson, Jerry W. Miller Jr.; granddaughter, Lisa R. Miller, all of Roanoke; brothers, Joseph S. Duncan, Crewe, Thomas E. Duncan, Roanoke, Giles H . Duncan, Salem; sisters, Helen Gilbert, Salem, Margarite DuBois, Yorba linda, Calif., Nancy Vernamonti, Las Vegas, Nev.; devoted sister-in-law and brother-in--law, Ralph and Marie Gravely, Roanoke; sister-in-law, Evelyn Ferrell, Roanoke; and numerous nieces and nephews. ELLIS, Walter C. Jr., 57, of Roanoke, died Friday, July 29, 1994, at his home after fighting a brave and courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Ellis was employed by FiberCom. Surviving are his wife, Rosemary B. Ellis; sons and daughter-in-law, Walter C. III & Martha P. Ellis, Salem, Jeffrey K. Ellis, Timothy K. Ellis both of Roanoke, Christopher P. Ellis, Richmond; grandson, Patrick E. Ellis. Graveside services will be conducted at Sherwood Memorial Park 12:30 p.m. Monday, August 1, 1994, with Rev. Mark W. Radecke officiating. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made in Mr. Ellis' name to Roanoke Memorial Hospice or Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge. HEDGE, Jerry Lawrence, 61, of Radford, died Friday, July 29, 1994 at Radford Community Hospital. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a barber in the city of Radford for 37 years. He is survived by his wife, Dolly Smart Hedge, Radford; one daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Roger Lilly, Radford; one son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Kim Hedge, Radford; mother, Alma Hedge Hale, Ft. Pierce, Fla.; one brother, Charley Hedge, Ft. Pierce, Fla.; two sisters, Betty Cowan, Va. Beach, Lois Register, Glen Burnie, Md.; three grandchildren, Joshua Saul, Corey and Heather Hedge. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 1994, from the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Tim Williams officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery in Radford. KARNES, Florence Rhodes, 76, of Buchanan, died Thursday, July 28, 1994. She was retired from Burlington Industries-Glasgow with over 32 years service. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret R. and Billy Broughman; granddaughter, Becky Broughman; great-grandson, Jamie Broughman; two sisters, Gertrude Light and Irma Wilson, all of Buchanan. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 1994, in Rader Buchanan Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Riley officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery. LEA, P. Gordon, 68, of Greensboro, N.C., died Wednesday, July 27, 1994, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital. Mr. Lea was born in Burlington. He was a U. S. Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II. He was a retired employee of the Osterneck Company in Lumberton. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Ron Clapp of King and Peggy and Jay Newberry of Salem, Va.; grandchildren, Laura and Richard Clapp and Tracy and David Newberry; nieces, June McMichael and Rosalie Ward. Funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Forbis and Dick, North Elm Street Chapel. Interment will be at Westminster Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. McCRAW, Lawrence T., (``Larry""), 69, of Buchanan died Thursday, July 28, 1994. He was an Elder of the Buchanan Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Stull McCraw, son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey L. and Jennifer T. McCraw of Roanoke; grandson, Cody A. McCraw. SCHOONOVER, Norris C. Sr., 69, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, July 27, 1994. He was preceded in death by a wife, Cora Elizabeth Schoonover. He had a career of 42 years with Harris-Harwood Corp. and 16 months with Singer Furniture. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Schoonover; sons and daughters-in-law, David Lee and Lori Schoonover, Norris C. (Pete) Jr. and Pauline Schoonover; stepson, Dwayne Allen Bowman; granddaughter, Melinda; stepgranddaughters, Jessica and Trina; brothers, Weaby, Roscoe and Gerald Schoonover; sisters, Nellie Paxton, Rachel Martin. SHARP, Edith Shaffer, 93, of Roanoke, died Thursday, July 28, 1994. Services 10 a.m. Monday at Oakey's North Chapel.

SHEARON, Ruth Agnes Odeneal, 83, of Blacksburg, widow of Nicholas A. Shearon, died Friday, July 29, 1994 at Heritage Hall Health Care Center. Mrs. Shearon was born in New York City on October 23, 1910, a daughter of the late Arthur Johnson Odeneal and Alice Roberta Hall Odeneal. She was reared in Norfolk, Va., a graduate of William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Va., and a public school teacher. She was former Regent of the Clinch Bend Chapter of the D.A.R. in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and was a member and served on the altar guild of St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Oak Ridge, Tenn. She and her husband were also members of Trinity Episcopal Church in Myrtle Beach, S. C. They were long time residents of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Myrtle Beach , S.C., and the Washington, D.C. area. Survivors include one daughter, Constance S. Wright, Blacksburg; one son, Arthur Nicholas Shearon, Alexandria; three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, August 1, 1994, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Myrtle Beach, S. C., with Rector Ladson F. Mills officiating.
