STARDOM HAPPENS TO FONDA

Ladies and gentlemen, a movie star is born. Or perhaps made, is a fairer way to describe what Bridget Fonda has achieved with her performance as the lucky-unlucky waitress in "It Could Happen to You."

In this pretty terrific, fairy tale of a movie from director Andrew Bergman ("The Freshman," "Honeymoon in Vegas"), Fonda earns her success with a lot more than great cheekbones and winsome charm. Somewhere in the middle of her first, big scene - when poor Yvonne the struggling waitress is trying to explain to a judge how her Master Card bill got rung up to $13,000 - Fonda turns appeal into something more like power. And she demostrates a surprising gift for comedy.
