ABOUT THIS REPORT

THE FOLLOWING is an outline of educational strategies developed by Roanoke Valley 2000, a community group sponsored by the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the school systems of Roanoke, Roanoke County and Salem. A more complete report, from which the group made this summary, has further details.

Joining business leaders, educators, children's advocates and others, Valley 2000 task forces last year crafted recommendations for achieving each of four goals, listed on this page. These goals (1, 2, 5 and 6) are drawn from a set of eight national education objectives, formally enacted by Congress in March.

According to John Stroud, president of the regional chamber, Roanoke Valley 2000 - one of many such initiatives across the country - is concentrating now on figuring out how to implement the short-term and long-term proposals for goals 1 and 6. The group also has begun work on goals 3 and 4, which pertain to achievement levels in math, science and other core subjects.
