Debra Howard was recently installed as Commander of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, H.H. MacKenzie Unit #3. Howard is a Medical Administrative Specialist at the VA Medical Center in Salem.
Also elected for the 1994-95 term were: Margie Stump, senior vice commander; Virginia Kline, junior vice commander; Joyce Allen, adjutant; Julia Stultz, treasurer; Jean Seleno, sergeant at arms; and Jan Woolwine, chaplain.

Museum gets funding for new facade
The Virginia Museum of Transportation has been awarded $228,000 in federal funds, as prescribed by the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act, to renovate the facade of its main facility, Roanoke's historic freight station.
The museum will increase the visibility and identity of the structure by painting the facade and building a new front entry, which will be punctuated by a dynamic image of a train locomotive piercing the building at an angle. It also will construct a pedestrian plaza between Second and Third Streets that will complement Roanoke City's proposed art/rail walk connecting the museum with Roanoke's Market area.
ABC Adoption names new executive director
Anne Brooke Carpenter of Roanoke has been named executive director of ABC Adoption Services Inc., a licensed nonprofit, nonsectarian adoption agency located at 4725 Garst Mill Road.
Carpenter was executive director of Catholic Charities of Southwestern Virginia for 13 years and supervised placement of nearly 300 children through domestic and international programs she initiated before starting this agency. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina and received a master's degree in social work from Virginia Commonwealth University.
ABC Adoption Services provides crisis pregnancy counseling, financial assistance and adoption counseling and placement to pregnant women throughout Virginia, free of charge.
Cancer society honors nurse at RMH
Nancy H. Agee of Roanoke recently received the Meritorious Service Award from the American Cancer Society, Virginia Division. Agee is the director of health education for Roanoke Memorial Hospitals.
An American Cancer Society volunteer for 20 years, she has served on the local, state and national levels. Her most recent activities include serving on the national organization's Health Care Reform Committee and being chairwoman of the division's transition committee, which was responsible for restructuring the state organization.
Agee is also a member of the state board of directors, the National Advisory Group on Nursing and the National Detection and Treatment Committee.
Yard beautification winners announced
Twenty-one residents were recently honored for their efforts in the annual summer yard beautification competition, sponsored by the Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority. Judges rated the overall appearance of yards and the garden.
Winners from Bluestone Park were James Hicks, first; Bette Scott, second; and Ella Mae Russell, third.
Hunt Manor winners were Lizzie Tucker, first; Barbara Porter, second; and Clifton Crews, third.
Winners from Hurt Park were Elloween Craft, first; Ruth Ann Casey, second; and Selma M. Martin, third.
Those from Indian Rock Village were Lucille Huett, first; Katley L. Griggs, second; and Cheryl Crayton, third.

Roanoke Rotary Club installs new officers
Joe M. Sears Jr. was recently installed as the 81st president of the Rotary Club of Roanoke. He is employed by Scott & Stringfellow Inc.
Other officers are: Edward W. Clark Jr., vice president; Robert C. Poole, secretary; James V. Thompson, treasurer; and James C. Sears, sergeant-at-arms.
