Thomas, a Glenvar football player, was on his way to Myrtle Beach, S.C., in June when he was killed in a car accident on a South Carolina highway. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a Glenvar football player. Deadline for entries entries in the captain's choice tournament is Sept.1. Entry fee is $200 for each four-person team. Brooke Adams, Carolyn Bucher, Emily Wichard and Lauren Feldman finished second on Wednesday in the 800 freestyle relay in eight minutes, 40.37 seconds at the Long Course YMCA National Swimming Championships in Nashville, Tenn. to put the Roanoke Gators in 10th place in the 300-team competition.
On Thursday, the 20-freestyle relay team of Miranda Deputy, Adams, Bucher and Feldman finished fifth in 1:51.98.
In individual competition on Wednesday, Bucher placed second in the 200 individual medley in 2:26.10 and ninth in the 200 freestyle. Adams was fourth in the 100 back stroke and seventh in the 200 individual medley. Feldman finished fifth in the 50 freestyle. Also, the 200 medley relay team of Adams, Bucher Feldman and Lissa Wood finished fifth.
On Thursday, Adams was fifth in the 100 butterfly 1:06.75, and Bucher was second in the 400 individual medley 5:09.01.
In the men's competition Wednesday, Matt McLeod placed second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.04. On Thursday, McLeod was second in the 50 breaststroke in 30.01.
Danville Post 325 defeated Roanoke Post 3 North 7-5 in the first round of the American Legion Blue Ridge District baseball tournament in Danville Thursday night.

Scott Volpitto of Augusta, Ga., and Charlie Chen of LaQuinta, Calif., each shot sub-par rounds to win their divisions in the 54-hole ClubCorp Players Junior Championship in Hot Springs.
Volpitto, a 15-year-old high school sophomore, shot a 3-under-par 69 at the Cascades to win the 15-16 title with a 54-hole total of 2-over 218. Roanoke's Brandon LaCroix shot a 77 Thursday to finish at 234 in the 13-14 division, and Roanoke's Mark Baldwin had a final-round 80 to wind up at 239 in the 15-16 class.
Jessica Wilkerson went 4-for-4 and Brandy Bailey struck out 10 in four innings of relief as the Roanoke Valley All-Stars 10-and-under team beat Indiana 10-7 in the first round of the Girls Fast-Pitch Softball World Series in Chattanooga, Tenn.
