Integration grant

BLACKSBURG - The YMCA Student Programs at Virginia Tech and the Voluntary Action Center of the New River Valley recently received a $1,000 Integration Grant from the Virginia Campus Outreach Opportunity League.

The grant will be used to create the Summer Learning Operative Training, a volunteer and internship program for youth. Virginia Tech interns will coordinate high school age volunteers in the development of service projects with youth from the Lantern Ridge Apartment Complex.

"Integration grants give Virginia schools the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with their communities, developing partnerships to address real needs in the areas of education, the environment, human needs and public safety," said Liz Baumgarten, Executive Director of the Virginia Campus Outreach Opportunity League. Students involved in the program will learn how to identify local needs, design service projects and work with community organizations.

The Virginia Campus Outreach Opportunity League is a network of higher education institutions in Virginia created in 1989. Its funding comes from the Corporation for National and Community Service. Grants totally $60,000 were award to 19 colleges and non-profit organizations in Virginia.
