U.S. DEFICIT GREW $33 BILLION IN JULY

The federal budget deficit swelled by $33.2 billion in July, 16 percent less than a year ago when a quirk helped inflate the imbalance, the government reported Friday.

The Treasury Department said the increase widened the gap to $183.6 billion with just two months left in the current fiscal year.

The Clinton administration is forecasting a $220.1 billion deficit in the year ending Sept. 30, smaller than the $254.7 billion gap in fiscal 1993 and the record $290.3 billion in fiscal 1992.

Many private economists contend the administration's projection is too high and are forecasting a deficit of about $200 billion this year.
