"I should know," said Fletcher, 27 and president of New River Community College's student government. "I waited 10 years."
Fletcher, who is from Narrows, has attended New River since January 1993. She's already planning ahead. "I'm going to get my liberal arts degree and then go to Radford for a bachelor's and then a master's and then I'll get a job and work on my Ph.D. I've had plenty of time to think about it."
Her goal is to teach Spanish or English as a second language.
As student government president, she'll deal with student concerns and help plan the spring fling and fall bash.
"We check on things," she said. "We have suggestion boxes in each building and we respond to each and every suggestion put in there."
New River has a diverse student body, said Fletcher, who was vice president last year. "We have single mothers and older students and those straight from high school. We have grandmothers and young people. They all have individual concerns."
Fletcher, who is divorced and has a daughter entering first grade, can relate.
She says she got involved in government because "I wanted to get involved in something. I talked to someone in student government and I said, 'I'm gonna have to check this out.' It was really neat."
Fletcher is in a work/study program, so she's already on campus a lot. She expects to spend more time there come fall.
