IN SCHOOL

BRIDGEWATER COLLEGE'S spring term dean's list included the following Roanoke Valley students: Michelle R. Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Garland Brown; Elizabeth K. Claybrook, daughter of David and Patricia Kirk; Jennifer A. Lowe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Lowe; and David L. Pugh, son of the Rev. and Mrs. William Pugh, all of Roanoke.

Also, David P. Cox, son of Kenney and Patty Cox of Salem; Jeffrey C. Mills, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Mills of Blue Ridge; and Christie L. Osborne, daughter of Gary and Carol Osborne of Daleville.

VIRGINIA WESTERN COMMUNITY COLLEGE presented awards to several students reie T. Williams and Leadership awards; Tsion Tewolde, Gloria T. Woods award.

Roanoke residents who received certificates of achievement were Marsha R. Banks, Daphne A. Boyd, Najela T. Comfort, Debra G. Flint, Brenda L. Jones, Colette L. Pannell, Samuel M. Pope, Mary A. Robinson, Nijyah S. Sabree, Crystal P. Simpson, Perry C. Taylor, Mildred A. Thomas, Sharon D. Walker, Carlos D. Williams and Darlene Williams.

Also receiving certificates of achievement were Michael N. Perdue of Troutville and Charles W. Sarr of Salem.

Eve Metayer was awarded a one-year nursing scholarship.

Students receiving awards in the spring art show included Amy Waldron of Salem, Best in Show; and Clair Natt of Roanoke, President's Purchase award.

Painting category awards went to Angela Matlock of Roanoke and Michelle McDaniel of Blue Ridge.

Graphics category awards went to Don Hix of Troutville, Jason Fizer of Roanoke, and Betty Dobbins of Roanoke. Dobbins and Fizer also received honorable mentions, along with Rebecca Wright, Hiroko Martin and Cindy Clarkson, all of Roanoke; Dot Phlegar, Judith St. Clair, and William Mahone of Salem; and Salena Parsons of New Castle.

NATIONAL BUSINESS COLLEGE has announced the names of its Roanoke-area graduates.

ASHLEIGH ROSS TRENT, daughter of Barry and Teena Trent of Roanoke, is the recipient of music and scholastic scholarships to Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn. She also received the 1994 Roanoke Valley Music Teachers Association Scholarship.

Trent is a 1994 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

ROBERT R. JOHNSON JR. of Roanoke and KIMBERLY L. GROSS of Buchanan recently received degrees from Virginia Tech.

Johnson, son of Louise and Robert R. Johnson Sr., received a master's degree in vocational and technical education. He will teach at William Fleming High School.

Gross, daughter of Roy and Judy Gross, received a master of education degree in secondary science education. She will be working as a biology and chemistry teacher in Gloucester County Schools.

ALISON K. SHERWIN, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard N. Sherwin of Emory, has been named to the dean's list for the 1993-94 academic year at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. She is a graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY'S COLLEGE OF BUSINESS recently honored three Roanoke students with college and departmental academic awards.

Glenda R. Morris received the Wal-Mart Retailing Award; Alison L. Scott received the Outstanding Student in Hotel-Restaurant Management Award and Pizza Hut Scholarship; and Elaina M. Schyphers received the Banfi Vinters Scholarship.

ROANOKE COLLEGE'S DEAN'S COUNCIL recently presented its 1994 Award for Exemplary Teaching to Bobbye Au and its Award for Exemplary Service to James Buriak.

Au, professor of English and director of the Honors Program, has previously been recognized for her commitment to teaching. In 1989, she was chosen Outstanding Professor of the Year by the college's chapters of Cardinal and Blue Key, and this year she was elected by the students, faculty and staff to be a member of the "Last Lecture" series.

Buriak, who has been at Roanoke College for 13 years, is an assistant professor of physical education and an athletic trainer.

KRISTEN HUFFMAN of Roanoke has been selected as one of 25 Trojan Ambassadors for 1994-95 at Troy State University in Troy, Ala. Trojan Ambassadors are hosts and hostesses for the school and recruit visiting students.

Huffman, daughter of Gary Huffman and Gwen Williams, is a junior chemistry major.

JEFFREY B. PATTERSON of Roanoke has completed a series of courses at the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology in Troy, Ohio. He also graduated from the Combination/Pipe Welding program.

DWAYNE E. WEBSTER, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis V. Webster of Hardy, recently received a bachelor of arts degree from Wake Forest University. Webster is a 1988 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

KENNETH S. REEDY, a special representative for the Franklin Life Insurance Co., has graduated from the company's Trainee Associate Program Congress VIII.

Reedy, from Salem, is a senior at Roanoke College and is involved in Franklin's internship program.

JOHN CAPPS and YVONNE ELLIOTT, both associate professors of English at Virginia Western Community College, recently completed requirements for doctorate degrees.

Capps earned an Ed.D. in English Education from Virginia Tech, and Elliott earned a Ph.D. in English from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.

STEPHANIE FRANK, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gil Frank of 4867 Hunting Hills Drive, was one of 107 students from 28 states to attend Washington and Lee University's Summer Scholars Program.

Summer Scholars is an academic program designed to provide students with an opportunity to sample college life. The program offers a choice of six curricula, each made up of three courses.

Frank is a rising senior at Cave Spring High School.

JULIE SINGLETON, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Brown of Fincastle, has been re-elected chairwoman of Mary Baldwin College's chapter of Habitat for Humanity for the 1994-95 academic year.

Singleton, a 1992 graduate of James River High School, is a rising junior at Mary Baldwin.
