The car driven by Patricia Wallace Kiser got trapped between the mechanical crossing guard and the track when the guard lowered at the approach of the westbound train. Kiser tried to turn around but was unable to do so, said Barry Buckner, a division commander with the Pulaski Police Department.
The engineer, Michael Eugene Williams, 39, of Roanoke, was unable to stop the train before it caught the front of the car and dragged it down the track. Buckner said Williams had sounded his whistle as he approached the crossing.
Kiser had been making a turn from Commerce Street onto Jefferson Avenue when the accident happened shortly before 10 a.m. Buckner estimated the cost of damage to the car at $2,000.
