In return, some charges were dropped.
Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Randy Leach said James Cobb is charged with four counts of robbery, five counts of attempted robbery and four counts of the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Cobb pleaded no contest to all of the robbery charges and one of the firearm charges, according to Leach.
The other firearm charges were dropped, and he will face the attempted robbery charges Oct.12.
A presentence investigation is scheduled for the same day, Leach said.
Police said Cobb, who was 17 at the time, approached four teens outside the T.J. Maxx store and demanded they empty their pockets.
They refused until Cobb showed them the gun in the waistband of his pants, police said. No one was injured in the robbery.
Leach said Cobb is 18 now, and was indicted as an adult.
Cobb can be sentenced to five years to life for each of the robbery charges. The firearm charge carries a mandatory three-year sentence that cannot be suspended or served concurrently with any other sentence.
Leach said Cobb was living in a Roanoke halfway house at the time of the crime.
