Beecroft beat Don Lashinger 3 and 2 in the morning round over The Homestead's Cascade course. In the afternoon round, he eliminated Ned Baber of Roanoke 4 and 3. While Beecroft cruised through the opening rounds, defending champion Jim Alexander of Lynchburg was upset in the morning round by Richard Willis of Richmond, 1-up.
The quartet of survivors in the top bracket included Don Foster of Salem, Bob Moyers of Newmarket, Don Ragland of Vinton and Ian Hacklett of McLean.
In the afternoon, Foster eliminated Willis 2-up. Moyers, following an easy 7-and-6 victory over Thomas Williams of Alexandria in his morning match, beat Sam Wallace of Williamsburg 1-up.
Joining Beecroft in the bottom half of the pairings were Dan Keffer of Salem, Frank Summers of Staunton and Wayne Jackson of Newport News. Keffer eliminated Bill Shrader of Roanoke 2 and 1 in the opener and Hubert Botts of Fairfax 5 and 4 in the afternoon.
Following today's two match-play rounds, the two survivors will meet Sunday in the 18-hole championship.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: The 11th annual Hudson's Cougar Touchdown Football Classic is scheduled today in Dublin, featuring eight high school teams playing two halves each in a final tuneup for the season that opens next week.
In the first matchup at 2 p.m., Christiansburg takes on William Fleming followed by Cave Spring-Brookville at 2:50 p.m., Salem-Jefferson Forest at 3:40 p.m. and host Pulaski County against Bladensburg, Md., at 4:30.
At 5:30 p.m., there will be individual contests for the fastest lineman, skill player, best punter, most accurate quarterback and the best field goal kicker.
Action between the teams resumes at 6:30 with Christiansburg facing Cave Spring, William Fleming taking on Blacksburg at 7:20 p.m., Brookville meeting Salem at 8:10 p.m. and Pulaski County going against Jefferson Forest at 9 p.m.
MORE GOLF:In Virginia Beach, Chip Sullivan, the teaching pro at Hanging Rock in Salem, shot a 7-under 63 to win the pro-am portion of the Virginia Beach Open.
Sullivan's 10-birdie effort over the par-70 Honey Bee Golf Club course gave him a two-shot win over Andy Harris of Hampton
A pro-am team from Roanoke finished second in the team division. Brad Graham, Johnny Walker, Dave Chapman and Stuart Meredith had a 122 total,18 under par.
