OREGON STOPS BEDFORD, 4-2

Bedford Post 54 wasted a solid pitching effort from Patrick Muncher in losing to Salem (Ore.) 4-2 in the first round of the American Legion World Series Friday night in Boyertown, Pa.

Muncher allowed seven hits and two earned runs in a complete-game performance. He struck out eight batters but walked five and hit four. Bedford, the Virginia state champions, committed two errors that led to two unearned runs.

Brian Puter earned the victory with six scoreless innings for Salem, and Mark Robertson tossed three innings of relief to get the save.

Ryan Gilleland, Brandon Inge and Jerry Padgett had two hits for Bedford, which plays Brooklawn (N.J.) today in the second game of a 10:05 a.m. doubleheader. Jonathan Thompson knocked in Bedford's only run.

Brooklawn lost 5-3 to Miami on Friday. Salem plays Miami tonight. In Friday's other games, Blissfield (Mich.) beat Russellville (Ark.) 5-2, and Chino (Calif.) beat Omaha (Neb.) 12-6. Today, Russellville plays Omaha and Blissfield meets Chino.
