IN SERVICE

Marine Lance Cpl. ROBERT RICE JR., son of Robert Rice of Pulaski and Kay Martin of Dublin, is one of more than 2,000 Marines and 3,000 Navy men and women enforcing the United Nations Security Council sanctions aimed at restoring democracy in Haiti. Rice is a fire direction controlman on board the USS Portland, a dock landing ship homeported in Norfolk. The ship is patroling the waters off the coast of Haiti. Its mission is to transport and land amphibious vehicles and Marines in case of an amphibious assault.

Air Force Airmen RICHARD GRUBB, son of Donnie Grubb of Christiansburg and Linda Snider of Dublin, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

Navy Seaman Recruit DAVID E. ABEL, son of James H. and Peggy S. Abel of Bastian, completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois.

Navy Seaman Recruit RICHARD C. THOMAS, whose wife, Traci, is the daughter of Rudolph J. and Wilma Sheppard of Dublin, completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois.

Navy Fireman STEVEN H. BALLAGH, son of R. Douglas and Elaine A. Ballagh of Radford, graduated from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Fla., and was promoted to his present rank.

Navy Seaman CHRISTY M. GRAHAM, daughter of Nelson G. and Linda T. Moran of Shawsville, completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Fla.

Marine Staff Sgt. BILLY J. HOGANS, nephew of Mary Rollins of Pulaski, reported for duty with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, Santa Ana, Calif.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class BILLY E. RIGGINS, son of Marvin E. and Lillie C. Riggins of Austinville, reported for duty aboard the amphibious command ship USS Blue Ridge, flagship for the U.S. Seventh Fleet, deployed to Yokosuka, Japan.

Air Force 2nd Lt. CHARLES H. PETERSON, son of Harvey H. and Margaret M. Peterson of Blacksburg, graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., and was commissioned to his present rank.
