Traffic delays
HILLSVILLE - If you plan to travel through Hillsville this weekend, expect traffic delays as the town's popular annual Labor Day Flea Market and Gun Show gets under way Friday. The event continues through Labor Day, and with 300,000 people expected to converge on a one-mile section of U.S. 58, the Virginia Department of Transportation warns that U.S. 58, U.S. 52, and U.S. 221 will be congested.
To avoid problems, the Transportation Department suggests, motorists use East Grayson Street and West Grayson Street instead of U.S. 58-221. South of the flea market area, Virginia Street will carry traffic away from U.S. 52.
Electronic message boards at the intersection of U.S. 52 and Virginia 148 at Fancy Gap will instruct motorists entering the town to use Interstate 77 north.
No left turns or right-turns-on-red from U.S. 52 onto U.S. 58-221 will be allowed. Only through traffic and right turns with the signal will be permitted. Left turn lanes will be blocked.
No parking in the median of U.S. 58 from the Hillsville town limits to I-77.
Parking and shuttle bus service into the flea market area will be available at the intersection of U.S. 58 and Virginia 808 south.
"These changes won't eliminate congestion," cautions Bob Beasley, assistant resident engineer for the Transportation Department's Hillsville Office. "Drivers should allow extra time to reach their destinations."
