RADFORD - Oliver North, Republican contender for U.S. Senate, has won 60 percent of the vote in a mock election at Radford University. Out of the 394 students who voted in the election, held to increase awareness and to get students to register to vote, North received 237 votes.
U.S. Sen. Charles Robb, running to keep his seat for the Democrats, received 110 votes, or about 28 percent of the vote. Independent candidate Marshall Coleman received 43 votes.
In the district race, Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, received 181 votes or about 46 percent of the ballots, Steve Fast 169 votes, or 43 percent.
Brian Murphy, who is in charge of special projects for Radford's Student Government Association, said 173 students registered to vote during two registration drives on campus, one in August and one on Monday. More than 160 students filed for absentee ballots from 50 different Virginia localities.
Radford University has a student population of about 9,000.
Salvation Army aid
PULASKI - The Salvation Army will accept applications for Christmas assistance at special sites throughout the New River Valley. Applicants must bring proof of birth for all children in the household and identification showing current address information for all adults.

SHARE anniversary
PULASKI - SHARE Virginia will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a potluck luncheon, live music and the Pulaski County High School mime troupe Saturday, Oct. 15, 1-4 p.m., at the SHARE Warehouse on Dora Highway.
The guest speakers will be Sen. Malfourd "Bo" Trumbo (R-Fincastle), Andy Morikawa, president of World SHARE and Ron Powers, co-chairman of the World SHARE Board of Directors.
