Conference on kids

Registration ends Thursday, Oct. 6, for a one-day conference, "Community's Children: Resources, Supports and Services," Tuesday, Oct. 11, at Heth Hall, Radford University. The conference is designed for people who work with children.

Keynote speaker is Carl Dunst of Allegheny-Singer Research Institute in Pittsburgh, who is known for his work in family-centered services.

Community professionals will conduct several topical workshops, including entitlements and funding sources, child advocacy, medical and health services, child protective services and prevention in the community.

The $10 registration fee includes lunch. The conference is sponsored by the New River Valley Community Services Board.

Nominees sought

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors will make appointments to these boards and agencies:

Agency on Aging. Members make policy and fiscal management decisions. Appointment is for one year.

Office on Youth Advisory Board: Informs county government and other agencies on youth-oriented issues. Appointment is for three years.

Comprehensive Services Act for At-Risk Youth and Family Community Policy and Management Team: Creates a collaborative system of services and funding that is child-centered, family-focused and community-based. Appointment is for two years.

Industrial Development Authority: Reviews and approves applications for, and issues industrial revenue bonds. Appointment is for a vacancy that expires Jan. 21, 1996.

Interested Montgomery County citizens who are registered voters and in good tax standing should submit a letter of intent to Betty Thomas, County Administrator, P.O. Box 806, Christiansburg, Va. 24073-0806, by Friday, Oct. 7.

Women's Week

BLACKSBURG - Planners of Virginia Tech's annual Women's Week will hold an organizational meeting Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 5:30 p.m. in room 133 of Lane Hall.

The meetings will continue every first and third Wednesday until the celebration in March.

Talk on deforestation

BLACKSBURG - William F. Hyde of Virginia Tech's Department of Forestry will speak on deforestation Friday, Oct. 7 at 4 p.m. in the Thomas-Conner House on Draper Road.

The meeting is the first October Round Table of the Center for Public Administration and Policy.

Festival of Leaves

BLAND - The Bland County Festival of Leaves is Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 8 and 9. Activities begin Saturday at 10 a.m. with an arts and crafts show and sale on the Courthouse lawn, heritage exhibits at the fair exhibit building, and other activities - including music, games and exhibits - at other locations throughout the event.

Fall tours are set for both days, starting Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. There is a $1 to $3 per-person charge for each tour.

An antique car show will be held Saturday, 1-5 p.m., at Dunn Motors' downtown lot. A youth talent review is set for 1-2 p.m. A street dance, with music by the East River Band, is Saturday evening, 7-10, at the Courthouse side street.

Sunday's activities begin with a flag raising at 10:45 a.m. and an inspirational service at 11 a.m. Activities conclude Sunday at 5:30 p.m.

About school needs

BLACKSBURG - The Blacksburg High School Parent-Teacher-Student Association sponsors a presentation Monday, Oct. 10, 7 p.m., in the high school auditorium, to discuss future needs for new schools in Montgomery County. A question-and-answer session follows.

Larry Schoff, director of facility maintenance and transportation for Montgomery County Schools, is the speaker.

Alexander Technique

BLACKSBURG - The Highland Chapter of the Virginia Music Teachers Association will sponsor a free introductory workshop on the Alexander Technique taught by Linda Babits Saturday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. in the recital salon of Squires Student Center.

The Alexander Technique is a body discipline that uses the body efficiently in performance to avoid stress and pain.

Babits will offer small group instruction for pianists at 4 p.m. and singers at 5 p.m. The small group fee is $8.

She will also give private lessons on Sunday, Oct. 9 by appointment. The private lesson fee is $40 for 30 minutes.

Floyd quilt show

FLOYD - The Old Church Gallery Quilters Guild holds its annual quilt show Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 8 and 9, at Floyd County High School. The show hours are Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday, 1-5 p.m. Makers of winning quilts receive ribbons and cash prizes or gift certificates.

The show is being held in conjunction with the Floyd County Woman's Club arts and crafts festival.

Depression screenings

FAIRLAWN - The Mental Health Association of the New River Valley - in conjunction with St. Albans Psychiatric Hospital - offers free depression screenings for National Depression Screening Day, Thursday, Oct. 6, at Fairlawn Presbyterian Church, Peppers Ferry Road.

Screening sessions are held 3-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.

Mental health professional will perform the screening, which consists of a written self test and multimedia educational presentation.

Symptoms of depression include fatigue or loss of energy, inability to concentrate, restlessness or decreased activity noticed by others, trouble eating or sleeping and thoughts of suicide or death.

Effective treatment for depression is available.
