RADFORD - The Radford Heritage Foundation wants to know what people think about proposals to set up historic districts in the city. A chance for the public to comment and make suggestions comes Sunday, Oct. 9, when state architectural historian Leslie Giles discusses her survey of the city earlier this year. Her slide presentation and talk are at 3 p.m. at the Radford High School Auditorium.
Giles has recommended the city consider applying for two historical districts, one in the city's East End and one in the West End. There's a possibility of a third district as well.
Bud Jeffries, president of the Radford Heritage Foundation, calls Giles' presentation "an eye-opening show."
At a presentation for historians and preservationists in August, Giles said placing properties or neighborhoods on the Virginia Landmarks Register or the National Registor of Historic Places is "meant to be of educational value," but the honorary historic designations also could boost economic development and tourism. She emphasized that no restrictions are placed on property owners if districts or structures are designated as historic.
The foundation plans to ask Radford City Council to designate it as the organization to spearhead efforts for historic district designation and to develop a historic preservation plan for Radford. That resolution is on the agenda for council's next meeting, Monday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in council chambers.
The foundation board recently voted to set up an endowment fund to provide long-term funding for foundation activities and to handle private donations.
