ALUM RIDGE - Fifty-five percent of voters in the Alum Ridge exchange of Citizens Telephone Cooperative rejected an increase of $3.15 in the monthly rate that would provide local calling service to Blacksburg.
The Citizens Telephone Cooperative polled its customers with a mail survey in response to a petition submitted to the State Corporation Commission to extend local service to Blacksburg.
NRVV teleconference
DUBLIN - The New River Community College will broadcast a live teleconference providing information on employer and employee issues on literacy, job accommodations and technology on Friday, Oct. 21 in Richardson Auditorium in Rooker Hall.
The program will focus on accommodations and modifications relative to the needs of adults with learning disabilities.

Landfill to be open
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery County landfill will not be closed, as originally announced, on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 8 and 9. Because of construction delays, the closing dates have been moved to Oct. 15 and 16 for installation of scales at the site. The landfill will reopen at 8 a.m. on Oct. 17.
