MAN ACCUSED OF WOUNDING WOMAN

A 22-year-old Roanoke woman was shot early Tuesday after a man broke into her apartment by removing an air-conditioning unit, police said.

Tina Chantell Loveless, who lives on Gandy Drive Northwest in the Lincoln Terrace housing development, was in stable condition Thursday at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Darrell Lamont Brown, 26, of Staunton Avenue Northwest, was charged with burglary, malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was released from Roanoke City Jail on bond.

Police said that once the intruder was inside Loveless' apartment, he kicked in the bedroom door. When he found Loveless with an unidentified man, he started shooting. The unidentified man fled. Loveless was hit in the stomach and forearm.

Police arrived at Loveless' residence at 2:56 a.m. They saw Brown, an acquaintance of Loveless', standing at an open window. Police said he told them that he had shot a woman. Police found a large-caliber semiautomatic handgun on the couch.
