BIG MAN HAS NICE WORDS FOR PERRIN

Scott Johnson praised the recruiting job done by Virginia assistant Tom Perrin when Johnson announced Thursday that he would sign a letter of intent to play basketball for the Cavaliers.

Johnson, a 6-foot-9 1/2 forward, averaged 22 points and 11 rebounds last year for Lassiter High in Marietta, Ga. He picked the Cavaliers over Wake Forest, Connecticut and Georgia.

``Everybody kept telling me that Tom Perrin had never recruited before,'' Johnson said, ``but every time I turned around, he was in the corner of some gym, not pressuring me, but letting me know I was wanted.''

Perrin served as UVa's restricted-earnings before moving up to full-time status last spring.

As a player at Johns Hopkins, Speno was a four-year letterman, playing on teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament each season and the Final Four during his junior and senior seasons.
