More than 20 years ago, Arthur C. Clarke's "Rendezvous with Rama" told the story of a future visit to our solar system by an exploratory craft from who-knows where, and a ship of human explorers who rocket out to make contact with it. In the 1973 novel, there was nothing in the craft (dubbed "Rama") with which to make contact; the probe was entirely automated. The story involves the humans' attempts to unravel the purpose of the machines and finally to return to Earth while the craft moves on to other systems.
