NEW RIVER PEOPLE

CRYSTAL ALBERT is back at Blacksburg High School after spending the summer, as she always does, in Aurora, Ore.

Albert, the daughter of Juel M. Albert Jr. of Longshop and Terry Jones of Ironto, works during the summer for Mike and Tracy Haack, who own Haack Cutting Horse.

While in Oregon, the high school sophomore participated in several National Cutting Horse Association shows and placed in all of them. This year, she won the Junior Youth Class and placed fifth in the Youth of All Ages Scholarship Cutting event. She rode Jerry Nye's horse, Dry Shadow, which has been shown nationally and placed in the finals in several major cutting horse shows.

Cutting is a Western sport for the American Quarter Horse with its own national association and competition purses comparable to thoroughbred racing events. Within 21/2 minutes, a horse must successfully cut a cow and keep it separated from the herd without visible cues from the rider.

Radford Animal Control OfficerFRANK HAVENS has been named by the Virginia Animal Control Association as the winner of its Kent Roberts Animal Control Officer of the Year Award. Havens was picked from among animal control officers from throughout the commonwealth. He'll receive the award at the association's annual banquet Oct. 20 in Charlottesville.

Havens' supervisor, Deputy Police Chief Jonny Butler, nominated him for "outstanding service to the city of Radford."

The city's animal control shelter also won an Award of Distinction from the Department of Agriculture, Office of the State Veterinarian.

The Rev. MANSON B. TATE of Dublin is the recipient of the Builders Award by Dublin's Henry Clay Masonic Lodge No. 280. Tate was honored in a ceremony Oct. 4. He was chosen because of the many contributions he has made to the community. Tate, who was the pastor at Dublin Presbyterian Church and Belspring Presbyterian Church, retired in 1978. He served as the chaplain at St. Albans Hospital from October 1984 to August 1994. He and his wife, Helen, have been married 53 years. They have two children and three grandchildren.

JOHN SNIDER of Pembroke has retired with nearly 28 years of service with the Virginia Department of Transportation. Snider started in 1966 as a skilled laborer, and upon his retirement was an equipment operator "B" in Giles County.

Snider is looking forward to gardening and spending time with his family. He and his wife, Dora, have five children and three grandchildren.

SUSAN LEWIS has been named the new case manager at Big Brothers-Big Sisters of New River Valley Inc. Lewis previously worked for the organization in the Roanoke Valley office.

The State Board for Accountancy has announced that KELLY RENEE JONES has passed the Uniform Certified Public Accountants Examination. Jones is the daughter of Gary Jones of Radford and Charlotte Jones of Myrtle Beach, S.C. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Gilmore of Radford and Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Jones of Dublin.

JOANN WILKERSON DILLON of Christiansburg has received an award of commendation from Chuck Hansen, state coordinator for the Adopt-a-Highway program. This award recognizes Dillon's work in this program since it stared in 1988. She is an office services specialist at the Virginia Department of Transportation's Christiansburg residency office. She has been a state employee since 1980.

Photography by MADELINE HYLTON was chosen for the Virginia Highlands Festival Photography Exhibition. The photograph is titled "Crockett's Cove," which is located in Wythe County. Hylton, of Blacksburg, also has a limited number of works on exhibit at the Newport Emporium in Newport.

Z.L. FENG, an assistant art professor at Radford University, recently took the Dorothy & Jacob Goldman Esq. Award at the Pastel Society of America's 22nd annual open exhibition, National Arts Club, New York City. Feng has also won the Carillon Gallery Award at the Society of Watercolor Artists' 13th annual national juried exhibition, Tarrant County Junior College, Fort Worth, Texas; the Ralph Fabri Medal of Merit Award in the National Art Club, New York City, sponsored by Audubon Artists 52nd annual national exhibition; the Daler-Rowney Royal Watercolor Set Award at Parkersburg Art Center, W.Va., sponsored by the West Virginia Watercolor Society Regional Aqueous '94; and the Samuel Burton Spence Award at the 1994 Watercolor Society XV national exhibition at the Gwinnett Fine Arts Center in Atlanta, Ga.

DEE J. DANNER, local Christiansburg dentist and balloon pilot, joined 100 other balloonists in a recent competition at the 21st annual WSOC-TV National Balloon Rally in Statesville, N.C.

The TORCH CLUB of Montgomery County has announced its officers for the 1994-95 year: Robert J. Stalcup, president; Vincent C. Talley, vice president and program chair; David M. Hudgins, secretary; and Chester L. Foy, treasurer.

The SOUTHSIDE GARDEN CLUB recently dedicated two trees to the memory of two former members, Mrs. Stuart Beville and Mrs. William Blokker. The Bradford pear trees were planted along the walking path at the bus entrance of Kipps Elementary School in Blacksburg. Mrs. Beville had been a member since 1974, and Mrs. Blokker had been a member since 1979. Mrs. Donald Bloss and Mrs. James Moore presided at the dedication ceremony.

The club held its September meeting in the home of Mrs. Thomas Caceci with Mrs. Jerald Robinson serving as co-hostess. The program, "Heirloom Gardening," was presented by Dennis C. Dove, a research associate in environmental engineering at Virginia Tech.

Winning blue ribbons for horticulture exhibits were Mrs. R.H. Baker, Mrs. Caceci, Mrs. Moore, Mrs. L.E. Moseley and Mrs. Jack Muench. Mrs. Daniel Ludwig was awarded a blue ribbon for an artistic arrangement.

The club also held two workshops at the recreational center at Warm Hearth Village this summer under the guidance of Mrs. Muench, garden therapy chairman.

TINA VAUGHN has had a homework management technique published in the September issue of ``Learning 94'' magazine. Vaughn, of Christiansburg, formerly taught in the area.

The MOUNTAIN VIEW GARDEN CLUB held its September meeting at the home of Ruby Murley with Virginia Shaw as co-hostess. Harriet Damant presided over the business meeting. Janet Buss, Sally Pierce and Lou Tuthill were accepted as new members. After the meeting, members toured the garden of Ed and Carolyn Zeigler.
