GILES MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO DRUG-RELATED CHARGES

A Giles County man has pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine and attempting to maliciously injure a sheriff's deputy while failing to stop for a Labor Day weekend sobriety checkpoint.

Richard Allan Hilton, 46, of Route 1, Pembroke, was ordered to serve 10 years in prison after being convicted on the two offenses.

Hilton was sentenced Tuesday after he waived indictment by the grand jury and entered the guilty pleas.

Charges of driving under the influence, refusing a blood or breath test and attempt to elude were dropped earlier at a lower court hearing.

The grand jury did return 20 indictments after meeting Tuesday morning. Among those indicted were:

Bobby Lee Ratcliffe, 46, Route 2, Pearisburg, on a charge of involuntary manslaughter. The indictment alleges that Ratcliffe unintentionally killed Gladys A. Ratcliffe, his wife, as a result of driving under the influence on Aug. 2.

She was riding with her daughter in the bed of a pick-up truck driven by Bobby Ratcliffe on Aug. 2. Gladys Ratcliffe died after being ejected from the truck bed when the truck went over an embankment on Virginia 100, about three miles south of Pearisburg, state police said.

Robert Glenn Kennedy, 19, 100 block of Jordan Street, Dublin, on a charge of carjacking. The indictment accuses Kennedy of seizing control of David Mark Sable's truck in Giles County on Aug. 27 by putting Sable "in fear of serious bodily harm or by the threat or presenting of a deadly weapon."
