GOVERNOR GIVES COUNT PULASKI DAY STATE RECOGNITION

Count Pulaski Day is officially recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia through a proclamation signed by Gov. George Allen.

A day of activities in the town of Pulaski is planned starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday for the 17th annual celebration of the day.

Most of the activities, which are free, will center around Pulaski's Main Street but will spill over to its Train Station, Old Courthouse, Jackson Park and other parts of town.

Allen has proclaimed the day as Gen. Pulaski's Memorial Day, noting that Count Casimir Pulaski gave his life 215 years ago fighting for freedom in the American Revolution and that the founding fathers of Pulaski County adopted his name in 1839 ``as a daily reminder of the price of freedom.''

``General Pulaski, an exile from his native Poland, arrived in 1778 to join General George Washington's army,'' the proclamation states. ``He became a Brigadier-General and Chief of Cavalry in the Continental Army, and commanded the famous cavalry unit, the Pulaski Legion, which fought nobly in the cause of American Independence ... ''

Town and county officials will kick off the day Saturday with a welcome at 8:30 a.m. in downtown Pulaski.

Welcomes will be offered by Pulaski Mayor Andy Graham, county Board of Supervisors member Bruce Farris, event coordinator Roscoe Cox, festival committee member Janie Hardwicke, and Count Pulaski himself (as portrayed by Winsdon D. Pound).

The Hunter Family from Roanoke will launch the first of the day's entertainments at 9 a.m. with mountain music. Marva Hickman and The Gospel Experience and the Randolph Avenue United Methodist Church Choir of Pulaski, and Pulaski singer June Draper, will perform in various locations at 11 a.m.

Storyteller and musician Chris White is scheduled to perform downtown at noon; magician Jeremy Greystroke, 12:30 p.m.; the New River Squares, 1 p.m.; juggler David Rose, 1:30 p.m.; The Sauerkraut Band, 2 p.m.; Christiansburg's Confederate Cloggers, 3:30 p.m.; Chuck Shomo and the No Name Band, 4:30 p.m.

Registration for a bike rodeo on the NationsBank parking lot will start at 9 a.m. Other children's activities will include a petting zoo, buggy rides and face-painting.

A pie-eating contest will be held at the Pulaski Fire Department at 2 p.m. with pie shells donated by Kroger, Food Lion and Wade's supermarkets. A teddy bear and doll show will be open to visitors all day at the Upstairs/Downstairs boutique at 27 W. Main St.

Tours of the Old Courthouse are scheduled for 1, 2 and 3 p.m., and of Pulaski's refurbished Train Station from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Raymond Ratcliffe Memorial Museum will be open at the depot during the day as well.

Other entertainment includes Revolutionary War re-enactors from North Carolina, arts and crafts displays, a Pulaski Police Department crime prevention booth and some surprises.
