Striking workers OK Reynolds pact

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - About 200 Reynolds Metals Co. workers who had been on strike for a week voted to approve a contract agreement Wednesday and return to work, Teamsters spokesman Jack Cipriani said.

Cipriani said union members at the aluminum beverage can plant voted 139-42 to approve the three-year agreement. About 215 Reynolds employees walked off their jobs last Thursday, upset by a company attempt to cut their pay and benefits about $2.50 per hour.

Union members voted to accept a cut in wages and benefits that amounts to about 18 cents an hour in exchange for a better medical plan, Cipriani said.

The Reidsville plant supplies cans for the Miller Brewery in Eden.

Saks off to Mexico; others are looking

Saks Fifth Avenue, the tony New York department store, said Wednesday it has teamed up with an unnamed partner and plans to open a store in Mexico City. No date was set for the opening.

Neiman Marcus, another specialty store chain, began testing the market last spring through its mail-order division and may also be considering opening a store there. Both companies draw many Latin American customers to their stores in Texas, Florida and Southern California.

Several more-moderate stores are also exploring opportunities south of the border, including J.C. Penney and Dillard Department Stores.

Merged chain's staff is largely Macy's

NEW YORK - Federated Department Stores Inc. and R.H. Macy & Co. on Wednesday announced the lineup of merchants who will lead an expanded Macy's East operation when the two companies complete their merger.

Three of the four most senior merchants at Macy's East, called general merchandise managers, are Macy's veterans. Both senior executives in charge of planning and distributing merchandise assortments also are Macy's managers.

Of the 12 senior managers named to the new executive committee that will oversee Macy's East, eight are from Macy's. The restructured Macy's East division will include Federated's Abraham & Straus and Jordan Marsh chains, with total annual sales of about $5 billion.
