The Roanoke Valley Chapter of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals holds its major fund-raiser tonight from 7 to 11 at the Sheraton Inn Airport in Roanoke. ``An Evening for the Animals'' is a black-tie-optional fashion show in which 40 models dressed by event sponsor E.I. Randle will stroll down the runway accompanied by either their own pets or SPCA animals awaiting adoption at the shelter.
The $25 ticket includes a buffet dinner and music by After Six.
The evening also includes a silent auction of more than 100 items, including a weekend for two at the Homestead, a two-night stay at Hilton Head and dinner at The Library restaurant.

Archaeological display
``Archaeology - More Than Meets the Eye,'' will be on display this month at Appalachian Power Co.'s Smith Mountain Visitors Center in recognition of Virginia Archaeology Month.
The exhibit, which was prepared by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, shows how, socially and economically, Virginians benefit from protecting our cultural heritage. It features Indian artifacts dating from the Paleoindian Period (9,500-8,000 B.C.) up to the Contact Period (ca. 1600 A.D.), when European settlement began in North America.

Art exhibit for kids
ArtVenture, an interactive art center for children located in Center in the Square, Roanoke, has opened ``Architecture Is Alive.''
The exhibit takes a futuristic look at life in Roanoke in the year 2400. Visitors can examine models of living quarters, schools and work spaces of natives and alien visitors. The exhibit will run until June 9, 1995.
ArtVenture, open Saturdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., is a project of the Art Musuem of Western Virginia and the Junior League of the Roanoke Valley. Admission is free. For information, call 342-5760.
Exhibit for children
``Dreamweavers,'' an exhibit of children's book illustrators and other fantasy artists, will be on display Nov. 5-Jan. 1 at the William King Regional Arts Center, Abingdon.
This collection of award-winning art brings together more than 40 works in a wide variety of individual perspectives and interpretations of fantasy and myth.
After traveling to Arizona, Ohio, and Massachusetts, the exhibit will appear at the Art Museum of Western Virginia, Roanoke, on Aug. 4. For more information, call 628-5005.
