FUMBLE RECOVERY SPARKS FERRUM

Devan Hill recovered a fumble and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to cap Ferrum's 17-9 victory over Montclair State on Saturday.

With the Panthers clinging to a 10-9 lead, the Red Hawks drove to Ferrum's 18-yard line with less than three minutes to play. But A.J. Wells fumbled, Hill picked it up at the 25 and raced to the end zone to seal the victory.

Montclair State (3-4) had one last chance, and the Red Hawks again moved to the Ferrum 18 behind quarterback Brian Cooney, who completed passes of 12 and 33 yards. The drive was squelched when a pass by Cooney, under pressure from defensive end Walter Bryant, was intercepted by Kareem Woods at the 13 with two minutes to play.

Ferrum (3-5) took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Ronnie Perkinson's 1-yard run and David Waddell's point-after kick. After Montclair State's Scott Rubinetti made a 42-yard field goal with 4:20 left in the first, Waddell kicked a 37-yarder to put the Panthers ahead 10-3.

Cooney hit Rodney Spencer with a 41-yard touchdown pass just before halftime, but Rubinetti's missed extra-point attempt left the Red Hawks trailing 10-9.

Perkinson, a freshman tailback making his first start, carried a school-record 32 times for 150 yards.
