RADFORD BEATS LAWHORN AT FCS

When Bobby Radford won a race Oct.15 at Franklin County Speedway, his only complaint was points-leader Dudley Lawhorn wasn't running at full strength.

On Saturday night, Radford's wish was granted. He beat Lawhorn in a head-to-head duel, leading flag to flag in the Late Model Stock Car feature race of the Ropho Sales 300. Radford beat Lawhorn in qualifying by seven-hundredths of a second, then beat the defending track champion, who started on the outside, to the first turn. Radford never looked back.

With the victory, Radford jumped over Carl Dadian, Frankie Pennington and Kenny Wagner into fifth place in points.

By finishing second, Lawhorn retained a commanding lead in his quest for a second consecutive title.

Steve Lynch, Lowe Smith, and Butch Isom finished 3-4-5, respectively.

In other races Saturday night:

Eric Bishop catapulted from the back of the pack to cross the finish line first in the Pure Stock race.

Although he was nearly eight seconds ahead of second-place finisher Tommy Dooley, Bishop refused to participate in the postrace inspection and was disqualified. Dooley was credited with the victory. Jay Peery was awarded second in the Pure Stock race, and Larry Gilly placed third.

Steve Lam added to his record-setting season in the Mini Stock division, winning for the 25th time in 1994. Jimmy Cox and Tommy Dean placed second and third, respectively.

Chad Hodges held off second-place finisher James Hunt in the Rookie race. Neal Amos was third.

Covington's Bill Bratton posted his first-ever victory in the Street Stock competition. Mike Elkins and Leon Dalton placed second and third, respectively.

Tommy Hall won the Truck competition, and Frankie Kelly prevailed in the Any Car finale.
