HOLLINS PROFESSOR WINS POETRY PRIZE
Hollins College English professor and poet R.H.W. Dillard will receive the
1994 O.B. Hardison Jr. Poetry Prize today at the Folger Shakespeare Library in
Washington, D.C. The Hardison Award, a $2,000 award, is given annually to an
American poet, who, in the opinion of the judges, best exemplifies the spirit
of inquiry, imagination, daring and scholarship that characterized the life
and work of former library director O.B. Hardison. Qualifying poets have
published poetry of the highest caliber, have made important contributions as
teachers and are committed to the work of furthering the understanding of
poetry and poetics.
Dillard has chaired Hollins' Creative Writing Program and co-directed the
Film Program since 1971. He has published five books of poetry; his newest,
``Just Here, Just Now,'' will be released this year. In 1987, he was named
Virginia Professor of the Year. An expert on the horror-film genre, Dillard
co-authored the 1965 screenplay, ``Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster.''
Since 1992, he has been editor-in-chief of the journal ``Children's
Literature.''
