SCHOLARSHIP, RESPECT WIN PUPILS AWARDS

At a recent surprise assembly, Indian Valley Elementary Principal Bonnie Smith named 113 pupils to the INDIAN VALLEY ELEMENTARY LEAGUE. The league rewards pupils for scholarship, citizenship, attitude and behavior. All the inductees had completed every assignment and behaved respectfully since the start of school.

The children received certificates and buttons for their hard work. The staff drew names to award five prizes. The winners were kindergarteners Casey Chinault and Kendra Poston, fourth-graders Angie Phillips and Angela Poston and sixth-grader Jodi Quesenberry.

Smith and Carol Cox, a school counselor, challenged Indian Valley's pupils, 70 percent of whom are already members of the league, to attain 80 percent membership in the next grading period.

After the assembly, the pupils participated in a period of outdoor activities.

Gilbert Linkous Elementary will celebrate its annual INTERNATIONAL DAY Thursday.

In the morning, representatives from 18 countries will discuss their native lands' cultures and customs in individual classrooms.

After lunch, pupils will attend an assembly featuring an international fashion show and a performance by the Ujima Dance Theater of Virginia Tech.

The 1995 GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL for the Gifted in the areas of Visual and Performing Arts seeks applications from rising 11th- and 12th-graders for its summer program at the University of Richmond.

The program provides artistically challenging and enriching experiences for students in a community of mutual support, respect and dedication.

The Support Group for Parents of Children with Special Needs will meet Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. at Christiansburg Primary School.

Felina Williams, a graduate student in school psychology, will speak on ATTENTION DEFICIT AND HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER diagnosis and will offer helpful ideas for dealing with the disorder at school and at home.

Free refreshments and child care will be provided.

Shirley Chapman Meador, educational consultant with the Child Development Clinic of Roanoke Valley, will give a free presentation titled "Smooth Sailing Through Homework" tonight at 7 in the Free Memorial Library, Dublin.

The lecture informs parents on HOMEWORK STRATEGIES and notebook organization.

Refreshments will be provided.

Here's the latest at CHRISTIANSBURG HIGH SCHOOL:

The choral department will hold a CRAFT SHOW to benefit the choral program, Saturday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in the high school gym. More than 75 vendors will display their wares.

The Choral Booster Club will sell concessions during the show and award door prizes hourly.

The College Board named 14 Christiansburg High students Advanced Placement Scholars for their exceptional performances on the college-level Advanced Placement Examinations.

The four seniors chosen as AP Scholars are LESLIE COSGRIFF, SARAH HALL, SHARON HUPPERT and MATTHEW LUCAS.

The 10 others graduated in June 1994. They are Crystal Clay, Grant Cosgriff, Andy Kopp, Aaron Payne, Jared Espley, Gregory Habeeb, Garrett Nunley, David Powers, Jodi Vaughan and Rebecca Wright.

The 1994 Virginia Music Educators Association selected choral students ERIN McINTYRE and KEVIN NEWCOMB to participate in its Honors Choir. The two recently traveled to Longwood College to audition. They will perform with the choir in November at the association's general meeting in Norfolk.

The American Association of Physics Teachers invited physics teacher CHARLES RENCSOK to present his paper on learning and design projects at its January 1995 winter meeting in Orlando.

Rencsok also teaches at Blacksburg Middle School and Auburn High School.

All 10th- and 11th-graders are scheduled to take the Armed Services VOCATIONAL APTITUDE BATTERY TEST on Thursday and Friday.

The test evaluates students' potential for further formal education in different fields.

Seniors who wish to take the exam may schedule an appointment with a counselor.

Halloween Happenings

NARROWS ELEMENTARY will sponsor a Fall Carnival and Bake Sale complete with a costume contest, games, face painting and a haunted house, Saturday 1 to 5 p.m.

ELLISTON-LAFAYETTE Elementary's Halloween Carnival is scheduled for Saturday. The flea market runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; food and game booths and haunted house will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

To reserve a space for the flea market, call Ronnie Raines at 268-5339 or Tina Sarver at 268-5098. All money raised will buy supplies and equipment for the school.

The Halloween Carnival at BETHEL ELEMENTARY is Saturday, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. One bag of wrapped candies is the admission fee. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

RINER ELEMENTARY's fourth annual Halloween Carnival will take place Monday, 6 to 8 p.m. Students and family members are encouraged to dress up.

The CHRISTIANSBURG PRIMARY SCHOOL's Parent-Teacher Association will present a Fall Festival Saturday, 4 to 9 p.m., in the school's all-purpose room. Cici the Clown will perform comedy, magic and balloon art.

Admission is free. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Each class at FALLING BRANCH ELEMENTARY decorated pumpkins as story characters. The pupils also wrote summaries of the characters' stories to display in the library with their pumpkins.

Radford Parks and Recreation Department's Halloween Carnival for children ages 12 and under is Saturday at 1:30 p.m. on the tennis courts outside the Recreation Department Building.

The carnival activities include a haunted house, a costume contest and games.

The admission fee is $2 per child.

The carnival will be canceled in case of rain.

PTA Meetings

The Christiansburg Middle School Parent-Teacher Association will meet tonight at 7 in the school cafeteria. The group will discuss the principal's views on education.

The Gilbert Linkous Elementary Parent-Teacher Association will hold a general meeting Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the school's multipurpose room. Linda Wagman, Montgomery County gifted coordinator, will provide training for parents in the Comprehensive School Math Program.

The Montgomery County Council of PTAs will meet Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Christiansburg High School library. The meeting's agenda includes a presentation on the Home/School Communications System.
