The supervisors, at their Oct. 18 meeting, adopted a resolution encouraging county voters to approve Constitutional Amendment 2 on Nov. 8.
The proposed amendment is designed to correct conflicts in the current state law and new federal regulations that become effective in January 1996.
Without the amendment, Virginia's voting registrars will be forced to maintain two lists of qualified voters - one for state elections and one for federal elections, said Zane Jones, supervisors chairman.
Virginia law also requires that people register to vote in the presence of a registrar. It also requires that the names of people who have not voted in four years be purged from voter lists.
The new federal regulations will allow registrations by mail and will eliminate annual purging.
