BLACKSBURG - The Southwest district branches of the American Association of University Women will hold its annual meeting and luncheon, Saturday, Oct. 29, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Montgomery County Library Community Room and the luncheon will be held at the Donaldson Brown Center.
Featured speakers are Lawrence Lundblade and Barbara Ruys. Their presentation will be "The Potential of the Internet and the Voice of Women."

Leaf collection
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Town of Christiansburg will begin its fall leaf collection within the corporate limits Monday, Oct. 31.
Collections will be conducted on a weekly basis in each quadrant as follows:
Monday, Oct. 31, through Friday, Nov. 4 and Nov. 28-Dec. 2, Southeast: area between east side of South Franklin Street and south side of Roanoke Street to corporate limits at the top of the mountain.
Nov. 7-11 and Dec. 5-9, Northeast: area between north side of Roanoke Street and east side of North Franklin Street to north corporate limits.
Nov. 14-18 and Dec. 12-16, Northwest: area between west side of North Franklin Street and north side of West Main Street.
Nov. 21-25 and Dec. 19-23, Southwest: area between south side of West Main Street and west side of South Franklin Street.
Residents should pile or bag leaves at the curb without blocking drainage ditches during the week leaf collection is scheduled in their area.

Early intervention
CHRISTIANSBURG - In celebration of Early Intervention Month, the New River Valley Early Intervention Council is sponsoring a free screening session for children two and younger, Thursday, Nov. 3, noon-5 p.m., at the Center for Women's Health, New River Valley Mall.
Free development, vision, speech and hearing screenings will be offered.

Gym schedule
BLACKSBURG - The Town of Blacksburg Parks and Recreation Department announces the schedule of the community center gym at 725 Patrick Henry Drive as follows: Mondays through Thursdays, 8 a.m.-10 p.m., free play 6:30-10 p.m.; Fridays, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., free play until 5:45 p.m.; Saturdays, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., free play will vary weekly; Sundays, 1-5 p.m., free play until 5 p.m.
The business office is open Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
The center will be closed the following days: Nov. 11 the office will be closed and the gym will be open 8 a.m.-6 p.m.; Nov. 24 both office and gym are closed; Nov. 25 office closed and the gym will be open 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Nov. 26 the gym will be open noon-6 p.m.

Sylvia Clute to speak
BLACKSBURG - Sylvia Clute will address child abuse legislation when she speaks in support of a proposed Virginia constitutional amendment Thursday, Nov. 3, 7-9 p.m., in the Montgomery Regional Hospital dining room. Question no. 1 on the Nov. 8 ballot proposes amending the state constitution to allow the General Assembly to reopen and extend the time allowed to bring civil lawsuits involving intentional injury to minors.
Clute - a prominent Richmond attorney and former U.S. Senate candidate - is a nationally known champion of child sexual abuse victims. The League of Women Voters of Montgomery County and Montgomery Regional Hospital are sponsoring her appearance. The public is welcome.
\ Red Cross plans Festival of Christmas Trees
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery County Chapter American Red Cross will host the second annual Festival of Christmas Trees at the New River Valley Mall and needs Montgomery County organizations to decorate the trees.
The event will open on Friday, Dec. 2 and run through Thursday, Dec. 22. The donations from this fund-raising event will go to support the programs of the local American Red Cross.
