UW GOAL ATTAINABLE, OFFICIALS SAY

The United Way of Montgomery County and Radford has reached about 36 percent of its $790,000 goal for 1994.

Donations are coming in slightly ahead of last year's rate and officials are optimistic that the goal can be reached or exceeded.

"We're on track," said Jo Lynn Price, campaign chairwoman.

This year's lower unemployment rate may be a contributing factor, Price said, along with the campaign's emphasis on letting potential donors know what their dollars can achieve.

"Many volunteers and supportive community members have focused their efforts on better educating the public and how the money raised here stays right here in our community," said Kymm Davidson-Hamley, United Way executive director.

Last month's Day of Caring saw 155 volunteers assist United Way agencies, a three-fold participation increase that gave the campaign a big boost, Price said.

The local United Way also is citing a number of area businesses or industries that have conducted particularly successful fund drives during 1994.

Central Fidelity employees have shown 100 percent participation in giving to United Way, a record the bank has maintained for the past several years. Public Finance Company has also had 100 percent employee participation.

Pulaski Correctional Unit's employees increased contributions by 256 percent.

Charter Federal employees' contributions are up more than 200 percent.

State Farm Insurance's donations are up 78 percent.

L.L. Brown Agency's donations are up 55 percent.

Lazarus Inc.'s donations are up 41 percent.

Waste Policy Institute donations are up 35 percent.

J.C. Penney's donations are up 32 percent.

Litton Poly-Scientific's donations up 21 percent.

Montgomery County Schools employees have exceeded their pledges while their campaign continues. Lowe's employees also surpassed their goal.

Some of the area's largest companies will conduct United Way fund raising next month. If trends continue, the goal may be achieved by the end of November, Price said.
