TEEN CENTER GETS GRANT

The Teen Health Center at Hurt Park has gotten a $65,000 grant from Virginia Health Care Foundation that will allow the Northwest Roanoke facility to expand its openings to five days a week and one Saturday per month.

The center currently is open only four days a week.

An open house is planned today from 3:30 to 6 p.m. to introduce new staff and explain the center's services. The center was established in 1991 as a pilot project of the Roanoke Adolescent Health partnership, which is a cooperative effort of the Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing authority, Roanoke City Health Department, Carilion Health System and Roanoke City Public Schools.

New board named

Center in the Square, Roanoke's downtown educational and cultural center, has announced eight new members of its Board of Directors.

Joining the board from the civic and cultural community are Lucy R. Ellett, Pearl Fu, and Barbara B. Lemon. From the business community are Thomas R. Brock Jr., General Electric plant manager; George B. Cartledge Jr., president of Grand Piano and Furniture Company; H. Lawrence Davidson, president of Davidsons; Kathryn B. McQuade, vice president-internal audit, Norfolk Southern Corp.; and Dr. John Wilson, president, Washington & Lee University.

Last year, the center attracted more than 500,000 visitors and provided more than $1.5 million in services to its resident organizations, Mill Mountain Theatre, Science Museum of Western Virginia and Hopkins Planetarium, Art Museum of Western Virginia, Roanoke Valley Historical Society and Museum, and The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge.
