UVA WOMEN FALL IN SOCCER TO WISCONSIN

Wisconsin's Carrie Maier scored in the first overtime period to break a 1-1 tie and lead the Badgers past Virginia in a women's soccer game Sunday at Charlottesville.

Mia Ward scored at the 73:59 mark of the game to give Virginia (13-4-2 overall) a 1-0 lead. Wisconsin (13-5) scored the tying goal on a penalty kick at the 86:47 mark.

The Cavaliers open play in the ACC tournament Thursday in Chapel Hill, N.C.

In other sports in the region:

Virginia Tech defensive tackle Jeff Holland returned to Blacksburg Sunday by plane after being treated at a Miami hospital for a sprained lower back Saturday.

The junior was injured in the second half of Miami's 24-3 Big East victory over the Hokies. Tests and x-rays revealed that Holland suffered no fractures.

Tech team doctors said Holland had made steady progress and he was released to return to the Tech campus.

James Madison senior Pleasant Hughes shot 1-under par 143 to earn the individual championship at the James Madison Fall Golf Classic at the Lower Cascades in Hot Springs. Hughes had rounds of 72 and 71 to edge Dirk Ayers (71-74-145) of Penn State and Jim Zettler (73-72-145) of Xavier.

Penn State successfully defended the team title with a 583 total in the 18-team field. Eastern Kentucky was second at 597, followed by the Dukes at 599. Radford and Xavier tied for fourth at 601.

The Highlanders' Eddie Kurpiel shot 77-70-149 to tie for sixth place individually.

Virginia Tech earned its first Metro Conference men's soccer victory of the season, beating Virginia Commonwealth 4-1 in Blacksburg.

Chris Chladek, Greg Kozma, Rodney Walsh and Mark Ludwig all scored goals for the Hokies (6-10, 1-3). Junior Adam Johnson had three assists. VCU is 5-12, 0-4.

At Greenville, S.C., the Virginia Tech men's swim team defeated East Carolina 136.5-106.5, while the Tech women's team fell 128-115.

Shawn Saathoff won two events and Collins Trimble three to pace the Hokie men's team (3-0 in dual meets) .

In the women's competition, Angel Muncaster claimed victories in three events and Martha Peck won both diving competitions for Tech (2-1).

Seniors Amy Dolan and Micki Hough scored a goal each to lead Radford (9-8, 2-4) to a 2-1 Colonial Conference victory over Davidson in field hockey. The Wilcats are 9-6-1.
