Clinic seeks doctor

FORT CHISWELL - Wythe County Community Hospital is seeking a primary care physician to staff a Fort Chiswell Clinic.

``Currently, we have three candidates who are very interested in the Fort Chiswell clinic,'' said Howard Ainsley, hospital CEO. ``One is a local physician. One is from another area but available immediately, and another candidate is available after July.''

Ainsley said hospital officials are in discussions with all three candidates, and that filling the position is a top priority for the hospital, since a previous doctor resigned from the clinic.

``Although recruitment is more difficult these days, and even more so in a rural area, we have several qualified physicians who are interested. We recognize the value of the clinic, especially to Fort Chiswell residents, and we are making every effort to continue providing health care resources that are accessible and convenient to the Fort Chiswell community,'' Ainsley said.

He said the hospital may have other doctors fill in temporarily until a permanent physician is selected.

Playground donation

WYTHEVILLE - The Hugh I. Shott Jr. Foundation Inc. is donating $25,000 to complete the funding of the recently completed Wythe Fun and Friends Playground.

The playground project resulted from local fund-raising efforts and volunteer labor. It was initiated by Kelly Sisti, Donna Howard Burgess and Arlene Crockett.

By the time construction started earlier this month, the community had raised $55,000 of the $75,000 needed. The foundation board voted to add $25,000, with extra money going toward further enhancement of the playground.

Without the donation, the project would have had to be reduced from its planned size.

Water system grant

WYTHEVILLE - A grant for 40 percent of the water system for the Big Survey community in Wythe County should be approved within the next two months, County Administrator Billy Branson said.

Loans for the balance of the $1,073,700 project will be obtained, he said.

Branson also reported that word on whether loan or grant funding can be obtained on a Fort Chiswell sewage treatment plant should be received in the near future.

Zoning ordinance

WYTHEVILLE - A draft zoning ordinance will be drawn up for consideration by Wythe County.

The county will advertise for the services of a professional in the land use field to assist the Mount Rogers Planning District office and county planners in preparing the draft and zoning maps.

The county Planning Commission will hold at least six meetings in different parts of the county to get residents' comment on the proposed ordinance before it is presented to the Board of Supervisors for consideration.

When the county last considered zoning, the residents' comments were mostly negative. Since then, the county narrowly escaped having a halfway house for inmates placed in the Max Meadows area and has been hearing a lot lately about the possibility of a theme park in the Fort Chiswell area. All this prompted some residents to ask that zoning be considered again to head off unwanted kinds of development and to guide other kinds.
