Pupils at NEWBERN ELEMENTARY created six scarecrows, one from each grade level, made from straw, sticks, pumpkins and whatever else they could find.
Parents helped work on the creatures and donated clothing and other decorative items.
The school displayed the scarecrows all week on the front lawn.
Principal Ned Olinger declared all six to be prize-winning scarecrows.
Children at CHRISTIANSBURG ELEMENTARY enjoyed a day full of interdisciplinary pumpkin activities Friday.
They scientifically observed pumpkins by weighing, measuring and finally dissecting them. The pupils estimated how many seeds they would find inside and tested the pumpkins' abilities to float.
On a more creative note, the pupils read and wrote poetry, wove pumpkins and decorated their works using sponge-painting techniques.
They also explored possibly the best-ever use for pumpkins: pie! They measured, counted and finally prepared "Mrs. Chernault's Impossible Pumpkin Pie."
Each class at FALLING BRANCH ELEMENTARY decorated pumpkins as characters from favorite children's books and wrote summaries of the characters' stories to display in the library with their pumpkins.
Third-, fourth- and fifth-graders voted to select the best character pumpkins.
The first-place winner is Ichabod Crane created by Louann Landreth's fifth-grade class. Kelly Olsen's third-grade class won second place with its likeness of Clifford the Big Red Dog. Third prize went to Sherri Kenley's third-grade class for its pumpkin, Arthur.
GILBERT LINKOUS ELEMENTARY pupils stenciled designs on pumpkins and carved jack-o-lanterns with chisels and peelers.
Virginia Tech executive food director and chef Kevin Murphy helped out by explaining the proper techniques for cutting pumpkins.
Falling Branch Elementary School's kindergarten and fifth-grade pupils have teamed up in the FIFTH-GRADE BUDDY SYSTEM program.
Each kindergartner has a fifth-grade buddy to show him or her the ropes. The fifth-graders guided the new pupils and their parents around the school during kindergarten orientation.
The school has several group projects planned throughout the year. The fifth-graders will read books, write stories and work on art projects with their younger buddies.
