TUNE IN NASHVILLE EARLY SUNDAY TO HEAR PULASKI'S JUNE DRAPER

Pulaski radio veteran and performer JUNE DRAPER gets a guest shot on Nashville's legendary WSM (650 AM) when he appears for the fourth time tonight (actually, early Sunday morning) on "The Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree" to sing a couple of his songs. Under normal nighttime atmospheric conditions, the 50,000-watt station can be heard in the New River Valley. The show airs Sunday at 1 a.m. EST.

Justin Tubb, the son of "The Texas Troubadour" - as his late father was known - is host of the show, in its 47th year and the second longest-running radio show behind the Grand Ol' Opry, which it follows on the WSM schedule.

Draper - who once hitchhiked to Nashville at age 13 just to touch the stage at Ryman Auditorium where the Grand Ol' Opry was broadcast every week - grew up to rub shoulders with some of country music's luminaries, including Don Reno and Red Smiley and the late King Harvey IV. Draper and his wife were guests at the last taping of "Hee-Haw," where he met George Hamilton IV, Roy Clark and others.

As a kid, Draper remembers tuning in WSM and other country and western music stations on a battery-powered Airline "farm set" with a green tuning eye on its dial. Local radio eventually became his bread-and-butter after he got his start at WPUV in Pulaski in 1947, a year after the station signed on. Later, he did the all-night show on WSLS-AM (now WSLC) in Roanoke, where Harvey did the morning show.

On the "Midnight Jamboree," Draper plans to sing two of his own compositions, "Autumn in Virginia" and "I'm Going Home," a gospel number.
