Thatcher: U.S. should limit campaign ads

WILLIAMSBURG - Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said Friday that the United States might consider following the lead of her country and limit campaign spending.

Thatcher told an audience at the College of William and Mary that Great Britain has minimized the influence of money in political campaigns by strictly regulating campaign spending and advertising, and by limiting the length of campaigns to as little as three weeks.

Candidates are given free time to speak on television, she said, but cannot run television ads.

``That's the way we tackle it,'' Thatcher told about 800 college alumni during an hour-long question-and-answer session.

Thatcher's comments came in response to a question concerning former President Reagan's criticism of Republican Senate candidate Oliver North. Thatcher called the question ``off side'' and never mentioned North or his race with Democratic incumbent Charles Robb and independent Marshall Coleman.

Neither side credible in lovers' brawl case

STAFFORD - He said she came into his house uninvited and performed a sex act on him, and he just wanted her to leave. She said he got abusive after an intimate moment.

But the judge who on Thursday considered criminal charges that the couple filed against each other over the lovers' brawl believed neither of them, and kicked both their cases out of court.

``With respect to what happened in a bedroom ... only two people know,'' Stafford General District Judge John Scott said. ``This court is not convinced beyond a reasonable doubt by either party.''

The man, 36, a 210-pound bodybuilder, had accused his former girlfriend of sexual battery and unlawful entry. He testified that he awoke on Aug. 29 to find she had crept into his bedroom and was performing oral sex on him. He threw her out of the house, but not without a struggle.

The woman, 95 pounds and 28 years old, said their sexual activity was consensual. She said the two began fighting when the man complained about her breath, and she suffered a black eye.
