CHRISTMAS IN NEW YORK

The movies would have us believe that the holiday spirit emerges in the cold city and transforms it. Not so. Not even Christmas can subdue the pace or overcome the great grittiness of New York.

But it does add a strong festive air to the city, and extra dimension that lifts the chins and swings the arms of the people on the street, denizens and tourists alike. And, yes, maybe there is even a barely discernable relaxation of the grim, robotic stare of the New Yorker on the subway platform.
