A PERFECT FINISH FOR GILES, MILTONS

PEARISBURG - Raypheal Milton set Giles' single-season rushing record and passed Leon King as the school's career total yardage leader as the Spartans wrapped up the Three Rivers District championship with a 35-12 victory over Shawsville on Friday night.

Milton, who ran for 81 yards and scored a touchdown on only five carries in the first half, finished the regular season with 1,607 yards on the ground. He has 5,933 total yards in just under three seasons.

Maurice Milton, Raypheal's brother, scored on runs of 74 and 25 yards on his only carries of the night - both in the first quarter. He ran for two conversions and kicked three extra points to finish with 19 points.

Giles, the state's top-ranked Group A team and the reigning Division 1 champion, completed its second consecutive unbeaten regular season (10-0 overall, 4-0 in the district) despite gaining only six first downs. Most of the Spartans' touchdowns came on long plays, such as Raypheal Milton's 53-yard run in the second quarter and his 34-yard touchdown pass to Chris Ratcliffe.

Chris Graham completed 18 of 32 passes for 208 yards for Shawsville (1-9, 0-4), which rolled up 356 yards of total offense. He completed a 4-yard touchdown pass to Taz Phoenix in the fourth quarter and hit Scott Hollemon with an 80-yard scoring strike on the last play of the game.

Christiansburg 66

William Byrd 8

Andra Beasley ran for 327 yards and five touchdowns on 18 carries as the Blue Demons pounded the Terriers in a non-district game.

Beasley had scoring runs of 58, 44, 7, 12 and 7 yards as Christiansburg evened its record at 5-5. Teammate Bobby Nichols had six carries for 138 yards and two touchdowns and Mischa Alexander returned an interception 58 yards for a touchdown and ran 30 yards for a score.

Barry Myvette scored William Byrd's lone touchdown on a 41-yard run in the third quarter. Myvette had 15 carries for 120 yards to lead the Terriers (4-6).

Christiansburg amassed 573 yards on the ground and never punted while holding William Byrd to 250 yards of total offense.

Grayson County 29

Floyd County 27

FLOYD - Jason Byrd and Chad Shaffner literally carried the Blue Devils to a comeback victory over the Buffaloes in a non-district matchup.

Shaffner ran for two touchdowns in the first quarter, but Floyd County (3-7) rallied and took a 19-13 lead on Dwayne Hale's 44-yard pass to Jason Pratt on the first play of the fourth quarter and Hale's two-point conversion pass to Jamie Warren.

Byrd, who finished with 209 yards on 37 carries, then took over for Grayson County (3-7). The running back scored on a 9-yard run and Shaffner connected on a two-point conversion pass.

After a blocked punt gave the Blue Devils possession at the Buffaloes' 12-yard line with 6:56 to play, Byrd punched it on a 1-yard run and Shaffner scored the decisive points on a conversion run. The quarterback finished with 136 yards on 19 carries.

Floyd County took the ensuing kickoff and drove to midfield, but fumbled away the ball. Grayson County then ran the ball and the clock, leaving the Buffaloes time for only one desperation pass that did not connect.

Jamie Warren led Floyd County with 79 yards rushing and Craig Reed added 76. Each scored a touchdown.

Tazewell 32

Blacksburg 15

TAZEWELL - Kon Patterson rushed for three touchdowns and Curtis Johnson ran for two as the Bulldogs overwhelmed the Indians in a non-district game.

Blacksburg (4-6), which won the New River District and will play in the Region IV Division 4 playoffs next week, opened the scoring with Steven Hunt's 71-yard punt return for touchdown.

Tazewell (7-3) scored the next 32 points. Blacksburg added a touchdown in the fourth quarter on Mike Davis' 12-yard run.

Galax 7

Pocohantas 0

POCAHONTAS - Randy Ashworth rushed for 102 yards and his brother, Andy, scored the game's only touchdown as the Maroon Tide upset Pocahontas.

Galax (3-7) blocked a field-goal attempt and held the Indians (7-3) on downs inside its 20-yard line in the third quarter to preserve the shutout.

Andy Ashworth broke up the defensive struggle with a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
