Cheap art

The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge will present works by area artists in its first ``Real Art, Real Cheap'' show. The event, to be held Nov. 29, 5:30 p.m., in Center in the Square's atrium, will benefit the artists and the council.

Paintings, drawings, prints and crafts will be available framed, unframed, shrink-wrapped, boxed or bare; ready to hang, ready to frame, ready to wrap or ready to wear.

Musical auditions

Auditions for ``Bells Are Ringing,'' a romantic musical, are being held by Virginia Tech's Theatre Arts-University Theatre on Tuesday and Wednesday, 6-10 p.m. in Tech's Performing Arts Building, room 105.

Group auditions will be held by director Barbara Carisle. Prior sign up is encouraged.

Sanity lecture

``Holidays and Kids: How to Go Over the River and Through the Woods Without Going Over the Edge,'' a free community health lecture, will be given Thursday, 7-8:30 p.m., at the Lewis-Gale Foundation Auditorium.

The speakers will be Beverly Barton Showalter, L.C.S.W., and Robert Lanahan, Psy.D.

Children care services will be provided on a limited basis for children 2-12 with pre-registration.

Book signing

Joan Vannorsdall Schroeder, author of the newly released ``Solitary Places,'' will sign copies of her book at the Mountain Book Co. in Covington on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The book is based on the real-life ordeal of the Kim-Stan landfill, the dumping ground for out-of-state garbage that unified the mountain community of Selma near Clifton Forge.

Schroeder lived near the site.

Children's museum

The Children's Museum of Virginia recently opened in Portsmouth with more than 60 interactive exhibits. Children can explore science, art, music, communication, cultural diversity and technology in the 12 exhibit areas.

The museum is open daily 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Friday until 9 p.m.; Memorial Day to Labor Day hours are daily 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Admission is $3.
