HOUSING NETWORK TO HOLD CONFERENCE

The Roanoke Regional Housing Network will hold its fourth annual Regional Housing Conference on Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Jefferson Center.

The conference will feature keynote speakers Stacey Davis, vice president of housing impact in the Federal National Mortgage Association's southeastern regional office, and Michael Carliner, vice president for economics and housing policy at the National Association of Home Builders.

Davis is responsible for implementing FannieMae programs for low- and moderate-income home buyers. She will lead FannieMae's efforts to develop innovative housing partnerships to address the housing needs of residents of the southeastern region, which includes Virginia.

Carliner is responsible for economic analysis and forecasting, survey research and analysis of government policies affecting the housing industry.

Five sessions will be held from 10:10 a.m. to noon. Session 1, "Tools to maintaining viability of housing stock," will include a discussion of recently enacted state legislation that gives local governments new authority to help maintain the viability of existing neighborhood housing.

Session 2, "Nonprofit developers: Executing the vision," will focus on building new, affordable housing units for low- and moderate-income families. Four nonprofit organizations will share their experiences in creating homes for hundreds of families throughout Virginia.

At session 3, Gov. George Allen's task force report on regulatory barriers to housing affordability will be discussed from local and state perspectives.

Session 4, "Infill housing: Reinforcing the community," will include a discussion of issues raised by the development of infill housing in urban and suburban areas.

At session 5, "Special-needs housing," panelists will discuss the need for special housing for people with disabilities and the availability of financing resources.

The first three sessions will run concurrently between 10:10 and 11 a.m. Sessions 4 and 5 will run from 11:10 a.m. to noon.

A workshop, "Evaluating a House's Condition and Shopping for and Selecting a Contractor, will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Better Business Bureau office, 31 W. Campbell Ave. The workshop is billed as helpful to the homeowner in monitoring a home's condition and identifying repairs.
