DRIVER CHARGED IN PEDESTRIAN'S DEATH IN SALEM

The woman who was driving the car that struck and killed a 55-year-old woman in Salem on Oct. 25 was charged with reckless driving Tuesday.

Terry Elizabeth Haynes, 36, was charged after a three-week investigation by Salem police.

Ollie May Harless was killed as she walked along the shoulder of northbound 419 near Lewis-Gale Hospital. She was struck from behind and thrown an estimated 30 feet down a steep embankment.

Haynes was not injured in the accident.

A release by Commonwealth's Attorney Fred King said charges had been delayed pending forensic test results. Blood tests showed Hayes had not consumed any alcohol before the accident.

A trial date has not been set.
