DOWNTOWN STREET TO BE CLOSED

Traffic on Commonwealth Avenue near the downtown Roanoke exit from Interstate 581 will be rerouted Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for utility work.

Drivers can still use the downtown exit (Exit 5), but will not be able to use the right lane to turn onto Commonwealth.

Also, Wells Avenue between Commonwealth and Williamson Road will be closed.

Laura Bullock, Virginia Department of Transportation community affairs coordinator, said that section of road will be closed for utility work associated with the widening of Wells Avenue to four lanes near Hotel Roanoke.

Flaggers and signs will direct traffic.
