WHOOPING COUGH VACCINE NEARS APPROVAL

A whooping cough vaccine designed to replace one that has caused serious side effects and about 250 deaths has been tested successfully in Sweden and could be available soon in the United States.

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development announced Tuesday that the new vaccine was about 71 percent effective in preventing whooping cough among about 1,700 infants who were inoculated.
