Roanoke's K.J. Hippensteel advanced to the semifinals in both singles and doubles in the United States Tennis Association's National Indoors Championships at the Midtown Tennis Club in Chicago. Hippensteel, the top seed in the Boys 14 division in both singles and doubles, defeated Ben Cox of Spring Lake, Mich., 6-0, 6-2, to secure a spot in today's singles semifinals.
He and doubles partner Phillip Nguyen of Lancaster, Pa., defeated Henry Bean of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Michael Rubin of Canton, Ohio, 6-2, 6-4. Hippensteel and Nguyen also will play in the semifinals today. Championship matches will be played on Monday.
Trish Nervo, a junior from Glenvar High School, came in sixth place at the Foot Locker Eastern Regional cross country meet held in Charlotte, N.C.
Nervo, the defending Group A 3,200-meter champion, ran the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 55 seconds. With her sixth-place finish, Nervo qualifies for the Foot Locker National meet held December 10 in San Diego.
Lee Taylor, a 13-year old from Roanoke, came in fourth place at the George Holiday Memorial Tournament held at the Myrtle Beach National Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Taylor shot a two-round total of 146, including a 77 in the first round and a 69 in the second round, to come in fourth in the 13-14 year old age group.
