South Carolina's opponent for the Carquest on Jan.2 at Miami's Joe Robbie Stadium will be an undetermined Big East Conference member - the Carquest gets third choice from that league.
``There are probably still four teams in that mix - West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Syracuse and Boston College,'' said Buddy Johnson, the Carquest Bowl chairman, speaking at a news conference at South Carolina's Williams-Brice Stadium. ``Now we don't know exactly who will be available. We'll know more [today] or Monday.''
Carquest officials also had been considering Georgia for the Southeastern Conference's slot, but made it clear they preferred South Carolina, because the Gamecocks - hungry for a bowl trip - are expected to bring many more fans than the Bulldogs, possibly 30,000 or more.
Brad Scott, South Carolina's first-year coach, was keenly aware of that.
``Without our fans, I'm not sure we'd have this opportunity tonight,'' Scott said. ``The crowd we could take with us is a good reason we can go to a bowl.''
TCU's opponent for the Independence on Dec.28 in Shreveport, La., will be an Atlantic Coast Conference team selected from among Virginia (8-3), North Carolina (8-3) and Duke (8-3).
``This is an ultimate reward for our football team and staff,'' said Pat Sullivan, the Horned Frogs' coach. ``We have worked very hard to attain some of our goals this season, and obviously playing in a bowl game was one of them.''
The bowl appearance will be the first for South Carolina (6-5) since 1988 and the first for TCU (7-4) since 1984.
