MELVIN BOUND FOR TECH

A weekend visit to Virginia Tech didn't tell Greg Melvin anything he didn't know. For two years, he has been telling anybody willing to listen that Tech would be his college football destination.

It took a two-year sojourn to Butler County (Kan.) Community College to make it possible, but Melvin confirmed Monday that he will sign with Tech at the first available date.

He had not taken any other visits and had none scheduled.

Melvin played tailback, tight end and wide receiver for Butler County, although he made his reputation as a running back at Bayside High in Virginia Beach.

As a senior, he rushed for 1,424 and 21 touchdowns despite missing 11/2 games and was named first-team All-Group AAA.

``I'll play anywhere [the Hokies] want me,'' said Melvin, who is listed at 6 feet 3 and 230 pounds and has been timed in 4.6 seconds for 40 yards. ``I don't mind defense.''

Melvin played safety as a junior at Bayside, although he has been an offensive player exclusively for the past three years.

Tech's other commitment has been from Melvin's teammate at Butler County, linebacker Myron Newsome, a Hampton High School product.

In other recruiting, 6-foot-4, 225-pound linebacker Rico McCain has told Virginia that he intends to sign with the Cavaliers. McCain had 101 tackles this past season for Providence Senior High School in Charlotte, N.C.

McCain had eight sacks as a junior, when he played outside linebacker, and is a natural pass rusher according to Providence coach Jim Secord. Secord said McCain had visits scheduled for North Carolina, Duke, East Carolina and Wake Forest that he may now cancel.

``I don't think he'll change his mind,'' McCain's mother said Monday.
